Physical and Mental Health During Pregnancy: What to Expect in Each Trimester?

Pregnancy is one of the most exciting and intense periods in a woman's life. It is important to take care of physical and mental health during this period to ensure the healthy development of mother and baby. The pregnancy process is generally divided into three trimesters, and different changes and difficulties occur in each period.

First Trimester: The Body's Preparation Period

The first trimester, the first three months of pregnancy, usually begins with the most significant physical and emotional changes. During this period, expectant mothers may often experience symptoms such as morning sickness, breast tension, fatigue, and mood changes. The baby begins to develop rapidly and the foundations of its organs are laid. However, pregnancy cannot be precisely determined during this period because fertilization usually occurs in the middle of the menstrual period. Therefore, actual pregnancy is usually detected by the end of the fourth week.

Second Trimester: Relaxation and Baby's Development

The second trimester, between the 12th and 26th weeks of pregnancy, is generally a more comfortable period for expectant mothers. Complaints in the first trimester begin to decrease and expectant mothers become more relaxed as baby movements begin to be felt. During this period, the baby's growth accelerates, he begins to react to touch and sound, his eyelids begin to open and hair begins to form. However, some expectant mothers may experience physical changes such as back pain, skin cracks, and an increase in varicose veins.

Third Trimester: Preparation for Birth and Final Challenges

The period from the 27th week of pregnancy to birth is called the third trimester. During this period, the baby continues to grow rapidly and expectant mothers often experience more physical discomfort. Symptoms such as swelling in the hands and feet, irregular preparatory pains, and frequent need to urinate are frequently observed. Additionally, the possibility of complications such as pregnancy-related diabetes and hypertension increases.

Suggestions for a Healthy Pregnancy

In every trimester, it is important for expectant mothers to take care of their physical and mental health. For a healthy pregnancy, it is important to pay attention to the following recommendations:

  • Balanced diet and regular exercise

  • Regular check-ups on the schedule recommended by your doctor

  • Avoid stress and take time to rest

  • Continuing healthy lifestyle habits (not drinking alcohol and smoking)

  • Feel free to seek support when you need it (family, friends, healthcare professionals)

Pregnancy can present different experiences for every woman, but regular health checks and healthy lifestyle habits are important for the health of mother and baby.
